Aug 28-Sept 1, 2017 Week 4

We had another great week of learning!  I already see progress in students.  We are rocking and rolling in class.  We have the ipads twice a week and we will be taking AR tests during these times.  I sent home your child's AR username and password last Friday in blue folders.  Please keep that information for when you take AR tests at home.  Any questions please contact me.  We went to the ArboREADum last Wednesday.  Although I was TPRI testing during this time, I know that the students had a great time reading in the boat and cave, exploring the listening center and using the mini ipads.

We started our nurture groups and discussing how we feel and why.  We will discuss this twice a week.  We made engine plates.  Ask your child to tell you about it.

We will read "The Big Blue Ox", the genre is animal fantasy and it's about a make-believe animal family that act like people.  Our reading skills are to blend and read short o words,  plural -s;  identify the character and setting in a story; and recognize predicates (action part);  We will practice blending, reading and coding words in Saxon Phonics.

In Math we will work on foundations of numbers to 20.

In Science we will Investigate Properties and Patterns.
We will identify the size, weight, texture and color of objects.

In Social Studies we will continue Community Rules.

August 14-18, 2017 Week 2

Hello to all our new followers!  My name is Ms. Harris and this is my 20th year to teach first grade!  I love everything about first grade!  I enjoy teaching all the subjects, but my favorite is reading!  Reading takes you to so many imaginary and real places.  My favorite all time read aloud story is"Junie B. Jones."  It is a funny make-believe book about the adventures of a little girl at school.  We end our day with Junie B and a snack!  The snack makes reading so much MORE interesting!  :)

I'm excited to say that week one is in the books and we had a great first week!  We have 19 cute little faces in our class along with a student teacher.   Ms. Higgs is my student teacher this year.  She is a senior and a softball player at TAMU.

This week we will read "Sam Come Back" in our reading book.  This story is realistic fiction that tells about made-up events that could happen in real life.  Our reading skills are blend and read short a words and digraph -ck words; recognize the characters and setting in a story; make inferences; and identify a complete sentence.  We will practice Saxon phonics daily.

In Math we will continue graphing.  We will be able to read a graph by looking at the data. We will also learn how to count and write tally marks.

In Science we will explore weather and weather tools.  We will learn what a thermometer, rain gauge, wind sock and weather vane are used for.

In Social Studies we will continue to discuss rules and why we need rules to stay safe.
