September 26-30, 2016 Week 6

YAY!  Fall is here!  My favorite season...looking forward to cooler days! 

                                                 
We will read "A Fox and a Kit."  It is a nonfiction story about a fox and her baby.  Our reading skills are: blend and read words with inflectional ending -s; inflected ending -ing; identify the main idea and details in a story; recognize and write a declarative sentence; put words in abc order; and practice Saxon Phonics.  

In Math we will use manipulatives and draw pictures to add and subtract numbers.  We will learn vocabulary words add, join, altogether, plus, in all, total, subtract, difference, minus.

In Science we will explore the properties of matter.

In Social Studies we will recognize good citizens.

September 19-23, 2016 Week 5

 This week we will be very busy again.  We have the "Back to School Ball" on Tuesday night.  On Friday we will have a "Math Marathon" during school.  The math marathon will be students rotating throughout all six first grade classrooms and each first grade teacher will teach a math activity that relates to the grade level curriculum.

We will read "The Big Blue Ox."  It is a fictional story about an ox.  We will blend and read short o words;  recognize the character and setting in a story; identify predicates in a sentence (action part -verbs); read words with plural -s;  and practice daily Saxon Phonics.

In Math we will continue composing and decomposing numbers up to 20 using concrete objects.  We will have a test on Thursday.  

In Science we will investigate properties of matter.

In Social Studies we will learn and discuss the roles of leaders and authority figures are in our homes and community. and discuss their roles.

We created windsocks and tested  
wind direction and wind speed outside.  










We played "OOPS" a sight word game with partners in class!






We learned that the plot is the beginning, middle and end of a story.
We sequenced "The Three Little Pigs" by putting the story in order.



We had an additional Science lesson with Mrs. Bridges.  She introduced the 3 states of matter and we discussed properties of matter.  We will continue this skill over the 
next couple of weeks in class.




 
             We observed how heat changes objects like this ice cube...

  AND Wowie Wow Wow!  We baked cookies on the inside windshield of MY CAR!  Can you believe it?!!! 
It was hot enough to bake cookies!

These engaging activities really helped the students 
understand the concept of how heat changes matter.

September 12-16, 2016 Week 4

Hello everyone!  I hope that all had a fantastic weekend!  I had a great weekend because I got to keep my new little grandson "Kash!"  He is now 7 weeks old and amazes me every time I see him.  I have to share a picture of him.  He is my LOVE!


We had a busy last week and because of that we will continue our same reading story and reading skills.  

Our story is "Pig in a Wig."  We will blend and read short i words; identify the plot of a story; identify subjects of a sentence;  learn abc order to the first letter; read consonant x/ks/ words; and practice daily Saxon Phonics to build letter sound fluency and word reading knowledge.

In Math we will continue to compose and decompose numbers up to 20.  We will use our tens and ones rods, cubes, and beans to help understand this skill.

In Science we will learn more about the weather. We will discuss types of weather patterns and make a wind sock.

In Social Studies we will discuss leaders and how they make rules for our community.

September 5-9, 2016 Week 2

Happy Labor Day!  I hope everyone has a fun weekend.  This will be a short busy 4 day week for us in class.  We will be working hard to cover new skills.

We will read "Pig in a Wig" in our textbook.  It is a make-believe story about animal fantasy. We will blend and read short i words; identify the plot which is the beginning, middle, end of a story;  identify the subjects of sentences (nouns); learn abc order to the first letter; make short i rhyming words; and practice daily Saxon Phonics.

*Amazing Words will be discussed during the week to build oral vocabulary.  Please discuss meaning at home as well.  

In math we will read, write and count numbers to 20.  We will use counters to compose and decompose numbers up to 20.  

In Science we will continue our study of weather. Last week we made a weather mobile, thermometer, rain gauge, and wind vane.  We discussed how a thermometer is used to measure how hot or cold something is, a wind vane is used to track the direction of the wind, and a rain gauge tells how much it has rained. We learned the word Meteorologist!  





In Social Studies we will learn about chronological time and "time order" words.  We will discuss terms "yesterday, today, tomorrow" and relate them to "past, present, future.
