December 1-5, 2014 Week 14

Welcome back everybody!   I hope that you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving!  I ate, then slept, then ate, then slept some more.  LOL!!!

This week we will be reading "Honey Bees."  It is a nonfiction story that teaches about the life of honey bees.  We will compare and contrast stories; identify nouns in sentences; blend and read long e, ee words; discuss antonyms; discuss alliteration ex: Teeny Tiny Teacher; and practice our daily Saxon phonics lessons.

In Language Arts we will write a letter to Santa. I know that Santa is very busy but I hope that his elves will write us back.  :)

In math we will compare and order numbers up to 99 using place value on an open number line.  The open number line is a new skill that was added to the first grade curriculum.

In Science we will explore the natural world.  Our focus will be identifying and comparing types of rocks.  We will take a nature walk and bring rocks from home to share in class.

In Social Studies we will discuss good citizens that have shaped our community, state, and nation.

We still have plenty of snacks to last until the Christmas break. I will send a January snack calendar with your child before the break.

Upcoming Events...
Each Thursday in December your child may wear a holiday shirt with jeans AND a spirit shirt and jeans on Fridays!  Ho Ho Ho!

December 16 we will watch the movie "Frozen" and students may wear pajamas.

December 17 - Shot Clinic
December 18 - Progress Reports

December 19 we will have our Christmas party.  We will have a cookie decorating party.  Our room mom, Mrs. Harrison will be arranging the party for us.

December 22-January 5 - Christmas Break

Thanks for following our class blog.  Have a great week!  :)

We Are Off To A Great Week!

On Monday students brought in their disguised turkeys that they created at home.  WAIT...Did I say turkeys?  Where...?  So creatively disguised!

That's right I am NOT a turkey!

On Tuesday we got a wonderful treat for winning the canned goods competition!  Our class was pleasantly surprised when the nice man entered our classroom with a variety of pizzas, cookies, and soft drinks.

Mrs. Miller brought her reading primetime group to perform a Thanksgiving readers theater.

On Wednesday we had a special Thanksgiving treat.  The students brought different kinds of fruit and we put it all together and made "friendship salad."  It was so nice to sit and eat together while sharing kind words about each other.

On Thursday we were ready to head

to the Giddy Up and Learn concert!

On Friday we said "Happy Thanksgiving!"

November 17-21, 2014 Week 13

I can't believe that Thanksgiving is this week!  Can you believe that we have been in school 13 weeks?  Christmas is just around the corner!

This week we will integrate Reading and Social Studies by reading and learning information about Pilgrims, Indians and the first Thanksgiving.  We will still have our daily Saxon Phonics lessons.  In Math we will continue subtraction.  We will not have homework or spelling words this week.  RELAX!

Congrats to the boys and girls for bringing 127 can goods! We won the pizza party for first grade! Thanks parents we couldn't have done it without your help!   :)

Thanks to Madeline H. and Madeline K. for the wonderful books that you bought for me at the book fair. Thanks for adding to our class library!  Love you thoughtful girls!  :)

Thanks Mrs. Leah Carter and Mrs. Tiffany Harrison for donating playdough for us to practice making spelling words and sight words.  :)

We will make "friendship salad" this week.  I will be attaching to Monday's newsletter what fruit your child needs to send to add to our salad.  This will be a special time for us to celebrate our friendship with each other.

PUMPKIN MATH ACTIVITY

Not sure what happened but our pictures from our pumpkin math activity got erased!  I just had to post them again. Our parents were so kind to come and help us weigh, measure, count the seeds and carve pumpkins.  Thanks so much to all of you!
