February 23-27, 2015 Week 24

Happy Snow Day!  I hope that everyone is having a great day off!  I stayed in and cozied up with a good book!  Since we will have a short week, we will stay on the same reading story this week and next.  We will NOT have a spelling test this week.  We will practice our new words this week and have our test next Friday.

Our reading story is "A Trip to Washington D.C."  It is about real things that you can see in our nation's capital.  As we travel to Washington D.C., we will integrate some social studies skills that will go along with our lesson.  Our reading skills are to identify facts and details; use adjectives for size; blend and read words with vowel digraphs oa, ow; and decode three-letter consonant blends.  We will practice letter sounds, blending, reading fluency passages, and comprehension skills with daily Saxon Phonics lessons.

In Math we will identify and create objects using 2D shapes.

In Science we will explore the weather and seasons.

In Social Studies we will learn map skills and the 4 cardinal directions.

February 9-13, 2015 Week 22

I'm sure that the boys and girls will be excited about exchanging Valentines on Friday so for that reason we will take our spelling test on Thursday morning.  This way our minds will be focused on spelling words instead of  sugar and Valentine cards!  LOL!

If you haven't already done so PLEASE send $2 with your child tomorrow to help pay for the cost of items for our Valentine Party.  We will have ice cream sundaes and cupcakes.

Our reading story this week is "Mama's Birthday Present."  It is a make-believe story with fictional characters.  Our reading skills this week are to blend and read words with vowel digraphs "ai, ay"; draw conclusions; identify adjectives; and review endings -er, -est; and consonant pattern -dge.

In math we will continue identifying coins and counting mixed sets of coins that include pennies, nickels, and dimes.  In first grade we will not count quarters in the sets. We will identify and name the value of a penny, nickel, dime and a quarter.

For Science we will continue recycling.  We will learn the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling paper, plastic, metal, glass, and our natural resources.

In Social Studies we will focus on landforms, natural resources, and how people use natural resources in our everyday lives.

February 2-6, 2015 Week 21

Will the groundhog see his shadow?  We will find out tomorrow morning.  Let's hope for spring weather soon!
Monday morning...And YES to answer that question he does see his shadow.  The saying is six more weeks of winter weather!

On Thursday we will be celebrating the 100th day of school!  I hope that you will help your child create something that represents the number 100!  You can make a necklace, a picture frame, glue 100 candies, pennies, or other small objects to a board or to yourself!   Just have fun creating and I can't wait to see all the cute crafts!  The school board members will come to judge the projects and the top 10 winners will get a special prize in the office.

This week in learning we will read "Where Are My Animal Friends?"  It is a fictional play about animal friends that live in the forest.  Our skills will be to blend and read words with comparative endings -er, -est; consonant pattern -dge; draw conclusions; read contractions; and practice decoding, reading and comprehending words from Saxon Phonics.

In Math we will identify coins.  We will learn what the front and back of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter look like.  We will count like amounts of coins.

In Science we will learn about recycling. Students will learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle paper, plastic and metals.

In Social Studies we will continue our focus on landforms, and natural resources. We will learn how to conserve our natural resources.

We will have our Valentine Party on Friday, February 13 at 2-2:30.  We will have ice cream and cupcakes.  Please send $2.00 to help pay for the cost of the party items.

Please send Valentine cards that morning with your child.  We will exchange them in the morning, so that during the party we can eat our goodies.  I sent a list of the student's names on the back of Monday's newsletter.

We are so happy to be 100 days smarter!
